The ferry was first started by Joseph Beek who earned the rights of running a ferry service from the city of Newport Beach to Balboa Island and Balboa Peninsula. Later Mr. Beek used the Ark for the full fledged ferry service carrying passengers.

In the early stages the ferry used to travel a distance of 0.25 miles which today has been extended to 5 miles.
