Mackinac Island

The small island of Mackinac spreads over a small land area of 3.776 square miles in the U.S. State of Michigan. Nestled in Lake Huron, the island is tucked in the eastern folds of the Straits of Mackinac, which demarcate the state's Upper and Lower Peninsulas. The British constructed Fort Mackinac, an important landmark of the island during the American Revolutionary War, owing to the strategic location of the island amidst the fur trade routes of the Great Lakes.


The island became a popular tourist attraction and summer colony in the 19th century. The Victorian charm of the island especially the Grand Hotel with its 660-foot (201 m) long front porch continue to enamor many tourists to this automobile-less island. 82% of the total island area is preserved as Mackinac.
